What is
Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of perfect relaxation, often with a
heightened state of awareness. Everybody enters into
hypnosis many times in the course of a day. Have you ever
been watching something on the television, only to find
that someone has been calling you but you have been so
engrossed, you didn't hear them. That's hypnosis. Have you
ever been reading a book and become so involved in the
lives of the characters you cry with them? That's hypnosis.
Hypnosis is a voluntary state which you can leave whenever
you want to.
There are many fears and misunderstandings about the use of
hypnosis and the myths that surround it are totally
undeserved. Hypnosis is usually induced by the sound of the
therapists voice, though you are unlikely to feel
hypnotised. There is no such thing as a "hypnotised"
feeling though many people find their senses to be far more
alert than usual. You will not "lose control" at any time,
nor can you can be manipulated in any way. There is no form
of unconscious and nobody can be made to do anything they
do not want to do. A person in hypnosis is aware of
everything happening around them, aware of themselves and
will retain a full and accurate memory of everything
afterwards.
Hypnosis is a totally natural phenomenon, simply a
comfortable state during which it is quite easy to converse
sensibly with the therapist. Almost anyone can enter the
hypnotic state easily, with the exceptions of the truly
mentally sub-normal, very young children and anybody under
the influence of hard drugs or large quantities of alcohol.
It is conceivable that any harm could befall anyone in this
pleasant state.
This is a relaxing and therapeutic technique which is
centuries old and is recognised by many branches of
orthodox medicine. Whilst not a panacea for all ills,
hypnotherapy can be an effective treatment for a great many
problems where psychological factors are involved.
Hypnosis itself is unlikely to provide a relief of symptoms
whatever those symptoms might be. It is the therapy -
Hypnotherapy - which is carried out within the state that
is important.
